News Update:

It's been a while, I know but here's an update for yall! The agent hunt is still going, but the method has changed. The next few will be spaced out but far more pin pointed. I decided to reach out to a few friends and if the method works, I'll blog about it one day. Until then, I have a new project in mind.
"Vision of a Kingdom's Fall" will be my first traditionally published work, but between now and then, I'll be working on a prequel, so to speak. This book will be posted one chapter at a time on a website to be determined, and FREE TO READ! Hopefully, this will put some of my characters, my style, and the world of Galtimer out there for all to see! If it does well, we'll have my lil sis to thank for it.
For the next few weeks or so, I'm going to be plotting my butt off.
I hope you've been enjoying my blogs and if you have any questions or ideas for future blogs, please feel free to tweet me @BC_Watts or email me at bcwattsthedreamer@gmail.com.

News Update:

Hey guys! Time for the weekend's Weekly Update! So here's what's been going on this week. Ya know how I told you writing queries sucks, waiting for responses is mind-numbing, and rejections are little trials of endurance?
Well... yeah... more of that.
I hope you liked last week's 'blog' where Sage was interviewed. This week's interview is with LaTao of Gander. She's the magic user of the group and most readers will likely see her as the main character. She's a spunky little spitfire that brings the sass and has the magical power to back it up.
As always, I'm open to new questions and ideas. If anyone has a question for anyone in my story, please let me know! Follow and tweet me @BC_Watts or email bcwattsthedreamer@gmail.com.

This week's update is more of the same. Query, rinse, repeat. Tomorrow's blog will be the first of it's kind, for me. One by one, each of the main characters is going to be interviewed! This week's interview with be with Sage, Son of Thaddeus. He's the moral core of the ragtag group of friends and arguably the main protagonist... of course, all of them think they are the main character. If any of them don't like being interviewed, I'll just blame my friend Amber. It was her idea.
As always, I'm open to new questions and ideas. If anyone has a question for anyone in my story, please let me know! Tweet me @BC_Watts or email bcwattsthedreamer@gmail.com.

News Update:

So, once again, the Louisville winds tried to Wizard-of-Oz my house. Don't you just love when neighbors hand you a piece of your house and ask "Is this yours?" ?!? Yeah... so that happened. So that's what my week and weekend will be about.
No worries. Won't stop me from blogging. Tomorrow's blog will be another "How NOT to Write a Book." This time, the subject is the annoying phrase "That's not writing." Mysterious? I know... but a few writers will have a guess as to what it'll be about. One thing about any job that you can do from home is that things pertaining to your job but aren't literally your job can feel like procrastinating. This blog is for anyone that's self-motivated and on their grind. Don't let that guilt get to you!
Speaking of my grind, the query struggle is real. The more I like an agent, the more time and effort goes into the query. Sadly, in terms of updates... it amounts to "Same same."
The next few blogs will be interesting. I'm going to have my narrator interview a few of my characters, so if anyone has a question for anyone in my story, please let me know! Tweet me @BC_Watts or email bcwattsthedreamer@gmail.com.

News Update:

Wuddup everybody (as in the few people who actually check my updates)! I get why these updates aren't exactly pulling in traffic. Until I am signed, I won't have much to update you all about. Wake up. Drink coffee. Grind. Repeat. That's me.

Writing a query is tough. You look up the agent. You read their notes, interviews, and reviews. You watch their videos and dig into every bit of social media you can find. After that, you need to find a way to use whatever information you can glean to write a message, perfectly tailored to that person. You must do so knowing that your letter might be number 247 out of the 300 they've read today. With multiple agents saying "I can tell if a book is good after reading the first 3 lines of the query, it stinks to know that after spending hours or days on something, 95% of it may have gone unread.
One positive I have going for me is that at least I know a handful of people are reading my blogs! At least SOME of my effort isn't going to waste. A lot of writing is about that, you know. Sure, there are days when thousands of words are put down in a days work... but there are times when hours of effort will go into what amounts to a single word or phrase. Days or weeks of research can go toward some reoccurring fact that most people will never notice... but people like me will continue that effort just for moments like this, when someone asks an interesting question! This one was particularly vindicating.

Tomorrow's blog answers the recently asked question, "How do you choose weapons or fighting styles for each character?" Each of the main characters is unique and the style in which they fight was not taken lightly. As a fan of Avatar TLA, I couldn't simply blurt out some typical style or even vaguely depict them as "good fighters" without an attempt of adding character to them. Nope... I had to spend years adjusting ideas and concepts until one fit each character. Keep your eyes open, because it'll be posted tomorrow!

As you can see, I'm ready to hear anyone's Q&A topics and questions. Hit me up through email: bcwattsthedreamer@gmail.com. If you haven’t already, follow me on Twitter @BC_Watts and of course, please spread the word!

It's the first of the month! (Wake up, wake up, wake up) I hope everyone is enjoying this insane weather. Hot? Cold? Tornado? Who knows what's next!?! All I know is that my collards are sprouting like crazy! They handled winter like champs!

So far, the update and Blog date changes have shown mixed reviews. The first Saturday post was only seen by a few people, same with the next. Last week's actually got a decent amount of reads! I'll treat it as a 'trend' for now... give it another month.

This week, my blog is about my characters. The Q&A question is "Who is your go-to character for a laugh?" Like any good adventure with friends, there's a long of banter and with it, quite a bit of comedy! If you're curious about my characters and how fun it is to write them, give it a read! It'll be posted tomorrow!

News Update:

The first few agents I queried were all promising, but the last and current ones are all pretty "Big time" if you ask me. It's pretty tough, doing your best and crossing your fingers, all the while convincing yourself NOT to get your hopes up. It's hard to pretend you don't think your story is worth being made as a TV show or big-screen adaptation when you honestly think it would thrive in such mediums... but I know it's not something to expect.

Evidently, there are a lot of writers who can't take being told "no" when the idea is shot down. They don't want to talk someone down if they expected their book to be the next Hunger Games or Bridgerton. They don't want to hear the sobbing of a writer after their book sells under 1,000 copies but they expected to be a millionaire by now.

I tell you one thing, this week's query is a doozy. The agent I'm about to reach out to is legit... I mean seriously. Experience, he's got. It would take forever to name all the authors he's helped win awards. To make it even crazier, this agent has MULTIPLE authors with books that lead to TV shows!

No pressure, right?

Yall don't wanna know how many times I've rewritten this query letter. There are so many parts to this. Shrink a synopsis down? Done. Show that you know your target audience? Got it. Explain how my book is different from its competitors? Okay... I think I got it. Talk about myself? Ugh... okay... but that won't take long. Cover all the basics? Tough... but doable.

Now... can I shrink it by 115 words? I'm glad I don't have long hair... or I'd be pulling them out right now.

I needed a break, so tomorrow's blog is gonna be a fun one! The topic is the simple question: Could any of your characters wield Mjölnir? (Thor's mighty hammer) If you want to know who is or isn't worthy, please be sure to check it out! If you enjoy the read, leave a comment!

News Update:

What's up, everybody!? As expected, the query saga continues. This week I listened to TWO seminars, each over an hour, each by highly accomplished Ex-Query agents with books galore under their belts. The two have so many awards among themselves and the authors they assisted. They both expounded in great detail as to what one should and shouldn't do in a query. I took SO many notes as they blathered on and on. It was quite painful. In the end... I wanted to put them both in a room and force them to make a new speech because THEY DISAGREED ON SOOOOOOO MUCH!

That blog where I talked about how tough querying is will be revisited once I have an agent. Until then, if you ever catch me IRL and ask me how it goes... prepare for an earful. I may be polite here, but in person, I will NOT sugarcoat this. You've been warned.

To all that are worried about me getting rejections, I assure you, I'm still sane... I mean... relatively sane. The well-wishes are sweet and much appreciated, but it's all part of the process. Sure, I'm a little disheartened by the rejections but like I said last week, rejections are expected. It's beyond rare to nab the first agent you query. As maddening as the process is, it's probably making me a better writer in the long run.
For those who are new to my updates, once a week, I let everyone know how things are going. In the past, it has been every Wednesday but from here on, please be on the look out for them on Fridays! I'll also tease you with the topic for tomorrow's blog.

Speaking of which, tomorrow's blog will be the the most popular question most writers are ever asked. "How do you deal with writer's block?" I swear, every time I ask someone for blog questions, if they give me a few options, one of them will be this very question. I've put off answering it for far too long, and tomorrow, you'll find out why!

News Update:

The query saga continues. Much of this week and last was devoted to compiling lists of agents to query. The list is long and getting longer. If anyone still has it in their head that I was going to be published within weeks, let me let you down easy...

The Help: 60 rejections from agents (Kathryn Stockett)
Chicken Soup for the Soul: 144 rejections
Lisa Genova, Still Alice: about 100 rejections
A publisher looked at 'Little Women' and responded, "Stick to your teaching, Miss Alcott. You can’t write." Dr Seuss was rejected 27 times before he ran into an editor friend that he asked to take a look at his book. The manuscript for Steven King's "Carrie" was rejected 30 times and we all know how that story went. The list goes on, and add me to it. I've already been rejected twice and I'm sure I'll be rejected a few more times. It's how it goes. I'm well prepared.

This Wednesday's Weekly Update is not a negative... it's more of an "All's going as planned" message. I'm more concerned about these updates, to be honest. I wonder how many people are actually even reading this every week...
Do me a favor... if you're reading this, respond to my blog. All you have to do is tell me what aspect of your life would be better if magic existed on earth, and follow it with the number 42. Thanks!

Week two of sending query letters is in the books. Wednesday's Weekly Update time! For a while, the updates are going to be very similar. Every week will be a grind, hunting for agents, adapting query letters, and occasionally editing future books. I have to repeat what I said last week... writing a query letter is HARD! After today, that will be two query letters sent. I've sent my professional artist the concept art for books one and two. I'm gonna do my best to keep it moving and fight the urge to stay still. My current goal is still to be able to send book two, “The Dreamer: Rousing Dragons” by this summer... but that's a best-case scenario heavily dependent upon how the agent reacts to book one, so this is more of a best-case scenario. Wednesday's Weekly Update time! So it's finally happened. I sent my first query letter. After years of editing, changing, editing, site creating, revising, and researching... (followed by even more editing) I have finally done it. Friends... I tell you one thing... writing a query letter is HARD! There's so much conflicting advice. As a matter of fact... that will be next week's blog topic... how NOT to write a query letter.
Today's blog topic is a Q&A question from the wifey. "What is your biggest fear as a writer?" I doubt anyone will guess my answer, but I'm sure you'll relate. As usual, if anyone has a question or a topic in mind, please feel free to hit me up. I'm always on the lookout for new topics!

It is time for Wednesday's Weekly Update! Last week, I went through all the revisions suggested by my Critique Partner and my Editor. Apart from a few hiccups, it went rather smoothly. That means, finally, it's time for the hunt for an agent to officially begin. If anyone has recently read a YA fantasy where teens go on a quest, that has smooth action scenes, where humor is abundant, or one that paints a high fantasy world with magic and dragons, please contact me through social media or email them to bcwattsthedreamer@gmail.com so I can use these books to aid in my agent search.
It's been a while, but today's blog is #5 of the series "How NOT to write a book" where I lightheartedly explore the bad advice people give new writers. Today's topic might through you off a bit... but it's on the subject of originality. How can "Be original" be bad advice? To find out, check out my newest blog! I hope someone finds it inspirational. As usual, if anyone has a question or a topic in mind, please feel free to hit me up. I'm always on the lookout for new topics!

I'm so proud of my team! Book one is awaiting a 'wifey-read-through,' but it's safe to say this is the "Final Draft." This week, I'll be searching literary agents and sending them what I've got. I underestimated the amount of research that goes into the agent hunt. I expect next Wednesday's update to be about my first query letter! Wish me luck!
I appreciate every single email address I've gotten! If you haven't signed up, please consider doing so. I'm glad I've amassed over 130 subscribers, but I'm going to need more. Please spread the word! The more, the better!
My current goal is still to be able to send “The Dreamer: Vision of a Kingdom’s Fall” this winter. I'll say “The Dreamer: Rousing Dragons” can be ready to send to publishers this summer... but that's a best-case scenario heavily dependent upon how the agent reacts to book one, so this is more of a best-case scenario. Either way, please keep wishing me luck!

Hello friends and fam! It's the home stretch for January! It's time to get to work... but first, let's get to Wednesday's Weekly Update!
My new goal is to have a preliminary drawing of my first book's cover done by February. I have an artist ready to turn it into a masterpiece, and I can't wait to see it! When I do the concept reveal, members will see it first, so make sure you sign up! I'm loving how the concepts for books one and two look sweet side to side!
Today's Blogs is another Q&A request, this time from my brother, Gene. The topic is 'worldbuilding' and I think young and future writers may find my advice pretty useful. The deadline is getting closer, all three of us are kicking butt with the final proofread. It's going to go to the wire, but our January 31st goal is still well within reach! With luck, the February 9th update will be about how I already sent out my first query letter! Wish me luck! We've got 125 people signed up on this site, and that's amazing! We still need more, so please spread the word!
Planning ahead, if anyone reading this is familiar with my work and can think of any books that are in any way similar, please email me with the title and brief or lengthy opinions on any comparisons, be it style, narrator voice, themes, etc. This info will help when selecting an agent.

Much Love!

Hello friends and fam! We're more than halfway through January ALREADY!?! Yeesh... time really flies. Guess it's time for our Wednesday Weekly Update!
I'm starting to solidify the image of my first book's cover. When I do the concept reveal, you all will be the first to know! The vision I'm tinkering with should mesh well with the design I have in mind for book two. Hopefully, they'll look pretty awesome when placed side by side.
Today's Blogs is a Q&A request. The answer is a glimpse into how the book was made and a sneak peek at a character you won't meet until "Rousing Dragons" (Book 2). My next will be a Q&A request from my bro, Gene. He asked a tough one. Please feel free to hit me with good questions or topics! I can name you if you want a shoutout, or I can keep it anonymous. You can contact me through social media or email me at bcwattsthedreamer@gmail.com and remember, even if it doesn't become a blog, It'll likely be added to my future "FAQ" Post-it.
If you haven’t already, please click that "Get The Tea" post-it on my homepage to make sure you get updated on the latest news from me! If you know anyone that might be interested in my story, make sure you tell them to go to bcwatts.com! If you haven't, click that "Social Media" post-it, please do so and follow me on all the things! I've been more active on Twitter and I'll post book cover concepts to Instagram soon.

The deadline is getting closer, all three of us are kicking butt with the final proofread. My writer bestie is still projecting January 21st as her goal. My editor's goal is January 31st so I'll have a finished manuscript to send to agents by the second week of February. With luck, the February 9th update will be about how I already sent out my first query letter... keep rooting for me!

My writer bestie and I are a third of the way through proofreading. My editor friend is still playing catch-up, but our goal is still to finish the proofread by January 21st. Once we are done, I'll be spending the next few months researching publishers, agents, and agencies. This process will be a tough one because each query I send will need to be catered specifically to the agent. If anyone reading this is familiar with my work and can think of any books that are in any way similar, please email me with the title and brief or lengthy opinions on any comparisons, be it style, narrator voice, themes, etc. This will help me immensely.

I'm in a pretty good mood. My bestie/critique partner is keeping me optimistic. Apparently, she's hardly finding anything to edit in the proofread! Even so, my editor friend should be starting her proofread today. The better it is, the less time it takes to proofread, so... fingers crossed!

The final edit is done. A fellow writer and an editor friend of mine are both helping me do a final proofread. With all the big issues accounted for, this stage is all about catching all the tiny mistakes. As that’s going down, I'll be researching agents. I’ll also be working on periodical blogs and researching new topics people may enjoy reading from me.
Wish me luck!

The editor commissioned to do the ‘developmental edit’ should begin soon, but first, my awesome wife has decided that she wants to take a whack at editing it. I'm glad to have such awesome loved ones keeping me hyped! I’ve suffered setbacks, but I’ll never stop trying my best with the people I’ve surrounded myself with. Love you guys!

My current goal is still to be able to send “The Dreamer: Vision of a Kingdom’s Fall” this winter and send “The Dreamer: Rousing Dragons” to publishers by spring.

What's up, everybody! Hope all is well. As for me, it's Wednesday, so it's time for a weekly update! A 'post-it' has been added to the main page to "Get The Tea" by submitting your email address! Please consider doing so to be up to speed whenever I post a blog, make an update, or finally have my book available! My third blog should be up and available before the day is over. You'll find it and more at bcwatts.com/blog !

For the final edit, I'm 24 chapters deep and counting! This is going faster than scheduled. Only 12 chapters to go! Wednesday, December seventeenth was my target so I'm glad to know that I'll likely do far better. Once that's done, I'll research agents and send them query letters with copies of “The Dreamer: Vision of a Kingdom’s Fall.”

Wish me luck!

The editor commissioned to do the ‘developmental edit’ should begin soon, but it turns out that I have some extra editing help before she takes a crack at it. I'm exceedingly grateful to have such awesome loved ones that are pushing for me to succeed. My goal is still to be able to send “The Dreamer: Rousing Dragons” to publishers by next spring, only now, I'm even MORE sure that it will be as awesome as the first.

At long last, I finally have my own website! It’s starting to feel REAL… but it won’t REALLY feel real until I’m holding a copy of my book in my hands. Ugh… Gotta stop beating myself up. Okay… Here I am...focusing on a ‘win.’ I have my own website now.
Soon, I’ll add more to the “Social Media” links and connect my other outlets, but this will be my main hub. I may post more blog-level things through here than other sites for now, but in the future... who knows. I’m still debating my official social media approach. How much ‘me’ will be in my posts is hard to say… I mean, I know that the goal is to get my story to as many people as possible so I probably should try not to push potential readers away… but I can’t help but be myself. And if you know myself… I’m not the best at NOT saying things!
My wife and besties will do their relative best to reel me in… so… wish them luck!
Status report:
I have book one’s final edit saved and ready. For the next three weeks, I’ll be non-stop going through the Copy Edit and making the final changes to “The Dreamer: Vision of a Kingdom’s Fall.” After a final proofread, my goal is to send the manuscript to multiple big book publishers by mid-December.

Book two is already in the editor's hands for its ‘developmental edit.’ My goal is to be able to send “The Dreamer: Rousing Dragons” to publishers by next spring.

News and Status and Updates will be posted here every Wednesday from here on! Eventually, I'll have social media links and will likely blog away... we'll see. Soon as I can, I'll be selling merch and if you ever see me with anything, I'll try my best to sign anything "Dreamer-related" that's handed to me!

For all of you who've read this far... Thank you... Sincerely. This labor of love has been almost twenty years in the making and I couldn't have gotten this far without support from family, friends, and people like you. I'll do my best to do all of you proud... and I hope you love my characters as much as I do!
Much Love; BC Watts
