Do you think you’re worthy to wield Thor’s hammer? Through many renditions and tellings of Thor’s story, the mighty Mjölnir gets picked up, swung around, and carried by many different characters. Each time, readers find themselves learning more about the rules for who it judges to be “worthy.” So… what do I believe makes one worthy, and could any of my characters wield that powerful weapon?

From what I gather, the rules that seem to be most often used are simple. One must be brave, just, and noble. One must be a fair fighter. They can’t be the type to take advantage of people. One must be willing to kill, if necessary, but not willing to kill someone that is surrendering or harm the innocent. Finally, one must be willing to put one’s life on the line to do what’s right and protect others.

After reading book one, the first name that may come to one’s mind is Sage. The young priest has a heart of gold and would sacrifice his own life for yours or mine without even blinking. In terms of righteousness, he’s the definition of noble… but he isn’t a warrior. Don’t get me wrong, the kid can fight, but if you asked Kain if Sage would kill, he would point at you and laugh his ass off.

Ah, Kain… he’d be the first to step to the majestic hammer. Everyone would watch him walk up with a cocky smile on his face. If any soldiers were around, they would smile and nudge each other, expecting to see something awesome. Sage would smile with pride, knowing that his friend is worthy. He knows that Kain is a fair and just warrior of noble birth. Many would look lustfully at his perfect posterior as he bends over, then his sculpted arm as he reaches down. When he grips the handle, the eyes of mighty Thor himself would widen, seeing Mjolnir move, ever so slightly. Alas, despite his bulging muscles and the eventual use of his other hand… the weapon will not rise. Though all of the boxes are checked, it is Kain who doesn’t deem himself worthy.

Sage would be the first in line to comfort Kain. The kind young priest would tell his friend how cool he is, reassuring him that everyone looks up to him. He’d question the hammer’s judgment, telling Kain “You don’t need that hammer anyway.” He'd listen as Kain eventually admits that it was because of his father. The pedestal The Great Kaolin is on is tall… but to Kain, that pedestal is on another pedestal… a target for him to reach.

Eventually, LaTao would join in on the hug and offer her support. Kain would feel her gently patting his back as she says, “Hey, bud. It’s no big deal. MOST people aren’t worthy of wielding that thing. I mean… who cares?” The pats on his back would start to get a little harder as she continues. “I mean, one day, I’m going to be one of The Nine! A Wizard with the power to literally move mountains! Do you think I care about some crummy little hammer? Now THOSE guys have some REAL tough requirements. You’ve gotta be a good person and all, sure, but you also have to be a ridiculously powerful Mage, willing to give up your allegiance to your King and country because the stability of the planet is a higher priority than a single kingdom.”

With the pats to his back feeling harder than LaTao’s little hand could hit, Kain would close his eyes, sigh heavily, and ask Sage, “She hitting me with Mjölnir, isn't she?”
